Initially begun with a request for an ebook, to provide an educational and entertaining glimpse into agriculture in Nova Scotia. Designed to 1] capture the interest of an upper elementary school aged audience, 2] promote a positive image for agriculture by highlighting farm level practices and 3] raise the awareness and profile of agricultural career opportunities. The plan began with researching the current Nova Scotia Department of Education curriculum outcomes for grades 4 to 7. We then aligned the end project with those outcomes for maximum use by teachers in Nova Scotia.
After the research, the ebook format seemed too linear for a curriculum that wished to teach their students the circular process of scientific inquiry, problem solving and decision making. Diversity of student skills and interests were also a concern.
An initial concept for a web-based environment that gave a structure to access a database of stories was developed. Project is on-going at this time.

The initial task was to develop a workbook for an adult literacy class that would incorporate both tools to read and write as well as information on the Occupational Health and Safety Act. In a co-operative process, a designer, writer and plain language specialist researched and brainstormed the initial concept. In conclusion an on-line educational learning environment was created that allowed the students to work through the curriculum. A fictional town called WorkTown was used as a visiting place to insert the participants into a real work place as most students were currently unemployed but looking to replace themselves into a work environment. Currently this site is on-line and will be implemented for the first time this fall at the Nova Scotia Community College.

A long but satisfying project – Beginning with a text written by Catherine Buckie, this project was developed from scratch. Scope of job included image research, publication design, and illustration work.
The most interesting portions of this job were the graphic illustration development for what initially was a long textual explanation of “how a bill becomes law”. This was developed into a visual sequential style of presentation. The publication was directed towards grade 7 students.

A handbook directed towards a readership that would not normally read a handbook for this information. This market included riders who had been using these vehicles for many years and new, younger riders. With the revision of the Off Highway regulations by the government, an updated and positive publication was needed. Publication design and illustrations were undertaken in this project. Working with a plain language specialist this colourful handbook was created.
